2013 was a very busy year for New England Crane School, and that means many of you are coming up for recertification in 2018. As most of our customers are aware, we changed certification providers earlier this year, from CIC to NCCER. We like NCCER’s comprehensive curriculum of training and certification programs across many different skill areas in the construction trades, and we also like the solid and long-standing reputation they have within the industry. NCCER’s crane operator certification is nationally accredited and meets the upcoming OSHA requirement, just as NCCCO’s and CIC’s does, but there are some minor differences in exam categories, testing process and recertification requirements. NCCER’s original certification process is simpler, involving only one written exam rather than the two to five exams required by CIC. NCCER exam categories are based on crane type only, rather than type and capacity, and the recertification process requires candidates to repeat both the written and practical exams every five years.

Rather than offering recert-specific classes, we will be accepting recert candidates in all of our regularly scheduled certification classes at a reduced price. The price will include everything that the initial cert includes, but candidates will be able to choose whether to attend all, part, or none of the certification class. We strongly recommend, however, that they attend at least part of it, unless they found their initial written exams to be fairly easy. There is a lot to learn when it comes to certification exams, and five years is long enough to get rusty on load chart calculations and OSHA regulations.
