Operators: The Deadline is Coming
By Anna DeBattiste, owner, New England Crane School
Not a week goes by that an operator doesn’t call me and ask if OSHA is going to extend the deadline for operator certification again. My response: No. Time to get it done.
The deadline is November 10, 2017, and that means next winter is crunch time for operators whose busy season is during the summer and fall. We are putting out our schedule for 2017 extra early this year, so those of you who haven’t certified yet can plan ahead.
New England Crane School had a fantastic season this year. Our classes were busy, and our exam pass ratio was the highest it’s ever been. Our last operator class was held in Vermont a couple weeks ago, and we have one more signal/rigging class coming up in Montpelier on May 20th. After that, we are available only by request, until our new public class schedule begins in late fall.
Because of the shortage of experienced crane operators in New England, some of our customers with hiring needs used our services to help them train rookies this year. If you anticipate a hiring need in the foreseeable future, here is our suggestion: start training an operator internally now, because you’re not likely to find an experienced new hire out there. We recommend having your candidate work around cranes for a while first; signaling, rigging, helping with set up, etc. Then send him to us for the classroom and written exam portion of our certification class, which will start him off with a solid foundation of safety and technical knowledge. Then apprentice him to one of your experienced operators and have him get some seat time, and call us again when he’s ready to take a practical exam. An alternative, if you don’t have an experienced operator for him to work with, is to schedule some one-on-one practical training with us on an hourly consulting basis.
We expect a very busy season in 2017, so don’t wait until the last minute! If you still have uncertified operators or need to train a new one, and you know which class will work for you, call us to hold a spot now, and we can confirm it when the dates get closer.
