News from NECS

By Anna DeBattiste

We have news on two fronts. First, we’re pleased to announce that we will soon become an NCCER Accredited Assessment Center. Weren’t we already, you might ask? Actually, no.  For the last five years we were sponsored by another organization to deliver NCCER exams, and this summer we decided it was time to become master of our own destiny and go through the process of becoming accredited ourselves. While this really will not affect our NCCER customers in any meaningful way, we’re still proud to make the announcement.
The second bit of news is that NCCCO is making major changes to their testing processes, options and rules, and this news will affect our CCO customers. Here are a couple of the high points:

  • Computer-based testing centers (CBTs) will be going away, and candidates will have the option to test on computers from their homes, using virtual proctors supplied by CCO. The option to test in person during public classes will remain in place, but all paper and pencil testing will be phased out, to be replaced by testing on laptops. One advantage is that candidates will get their scores immediately upon completing written exams.
  • NCCCO will begin allowing last-minute exam registrations and changes and will cease some of the fees they have always charged for changes and late applications.
  • NCCCO will no longer allow us to use the classroom instructor as the practical examiner, so our staffing requirements will increase and that means our pricing will have to increase also. This won’t happen until January, however. Consider taking advantage of our upcoming October 24 – 28 class at Shawmut Equipment, which will be our last class structured in the old format.

NECS is Looking for Help!
We are seeking at least one and possibly more part-time on-call NCCER practical examiners. This is ideal for an operator who wants to semi-retire, or a crane service operator who needs additional work during the winter/spring season. Travel throughout New England is required.

Please email anna@newenglandcraneschool.com with questions or to express interest.
