Winter 2026
Are you due for an operator recertification? Here’s what you need to know.

For NCCER recerts, you need to take both a written and practical exam in each category you’re certified for every five years, just like you did when you first got certified. We have four options for you:

  • Take a full (rookie/long) five-day class and get maximum help prepping for your written exams. Testing will be that week, and you can skip the practical training day on Thursday for a reduced registration fee.
  • Take a short/recert class. We’ll send a study package in advance for you to study on your own, give you one day of review in the classroom to answer questions you have, then administer your exams. Your written exam(s) will be the second day of the class. Your practical exam(s) will be scheduled onsite on your crane, either that same day or by appointment on another day.
  • Study on your own and test by appointment. You can take your written exam in our office or at one of our regularly scheduled classes on the exam day. Your practical exam will be scheduled onsite on your crane.
  • Set up private tutoring, then test by appointment. This is a great option for anyone who needs a little extra assistance, whether because of test anxiety, reading comprehension problems, learning disabilities, or speaking English as a second language.

One thing to note with all these options is that if we’re coming to you for onsite practical exams on your crane, we need to have sufficient space. The space requirement is dependent on the boom length, but we estimate approximately 30 yards from the side of the crane.
For NCCCO recerts who have 1000 hours of seat time in the past five years, you only need to take a written exam(s). If you don’t need help preparing for your exams, you can get set up to take those exams at your office or even at home with a CCO proctor on a webcam, or at a CCO Testing Center (TCT) near you. (Read more about DIY CCO recertification here.) If you do need help prepping, and/or you prefer to have your exam administered by us, we have two options:

  • Take a modified version of our full CCO class at Shawmut Equipment on March 30 – April 3rd
  • Set up private tutoring and testing in our office by appointment. This may also be available onsite in your office at additional cost.

Announcing new NCCER certifications available soon

Starting this spring, we will have the following NCCER certifications available:

  • Service Mechanic Truck
  • Articulating Boom Crane

Operators of these two crane types have previously certified with us in the boom truck category, but many have complained that the exam questions – and thus our study materials - are beyond the scope of what they do. If your operator is only running one of these crane types and you don’t expect him/her to need anything further in the near future, this is an ideal solution.

The Top 5 Safety Issues We See in the Field

    • Unqualified signal people
    • Bad rigging – uninspected damaged equipment
    • Lack of PPE
    • Not using padding on synthetic slings, punching holes in the synthetics
    • Uninspected cranes

New PPE Fit Requirement — Effective January 13, 2025

New PPE Fit Requirement — Effective January 13, 2025
OSHA finalized a rule revising 29 CFR 1926.95(c) (Criteria for Personal Protective Equipment) to explicitly require that personal protective equipment (PPE) “properly fits” each construction worker who needs it

  • Previously, OSHA’s construction PPE standard required PPE be provided, but did not explicitly state that it must be sized to fit individual workers.
  • The updated rule clarifies that employers must ensure PPE is appropriate in design and size for each worker, aligning construction standards with general industry PPE requirements.

This change took effect on January 13, 2025
