In uncertain times, don’t take shortcuts with safety

By Anna DeBattiste, NECS owner

New England Crane School doesn’t talk politics, but we do want to acknowledge that current events at the federal level may have some of our customers facing financial uncertainty and therefore difficulty in future business planning. We’re feeling uncertainty in our business planning process too, and we want you to know that you have our support.

We know you already know this, but we want to emphasize how important it is not to cut safety measures in an effort to cut spending.  We’re not just talking about training, qualification and certification, but also about equipment. Buying cheap shackles, straps and other rigging equipment not rated for overhead lifting might save a few bucks now but can spell disaster later. And disaster is expensive.

Operators and riggers should be more observant in these times and should not be afraid to call the supervisor, owner or purchasing department when they see old rigging equipment that should be replaced, or that isn’t rated for lifting. Our practical examiner, Bob, comments, “When qualified operators and riggers work together with supervisors and the purchasing department, often rigging can be chosen that saves time and money without sacrificing safety. You can improve overall safety and cut costs by saving time.”

Never hesitate to drop us an email or a call when you need crane-related safety advice!  We’ve been here for our customers for nearly 15 years and we expect to be here for another 15 and beyond, no matter what goes on in Washington.

“Between Mark and Bob, our guys are able to connect, relate, and learn which makes the experience and investment well worth it!”
–Chris Girard, Dock Doctors

NCCER to add new certification categories
Recently, our certification provider NCCER announced they would be adding certification categories for overhead crane, service truck, tower crane and articulating boom crane. While we don’t yet have a timeline for this, New England Crane School intends to begin offering some of these new certifications as soon as practically possible after they become available. Our top priorities will likely be overhead crane and articulating boom crane certs. Interested? Reach out to us at anna@newenglandcraneschool.com and we’ll put you on a notification list.
