He was picking up concrete panels for a bridge deck, working for a new company. It was his first time lifting on the jobsite. Nerve-wracked, with people working all over, Matt did not want to hurt anyone. He watched as an operator with more experience lifted the panels from the shipping container and brought them to the work zone. Then, it was his turn.
Bob is what some might call a renaissance man. Since joining NECS as practical examiner in the spring of 2022, we’ve come to know his varied background through his love of storytelling and conversation. While he may be a man of varied interests, spending much of his free time restoring radios, building sculptural tube amplifiers and frames for his artist’s wife’s glass art, he attributes much of his professional skillset to working on a marina for several decades.
“I’m not a trainer. You train monkeys. I’m an educator. I give you the tools and skills to make it on your own,” says Mark Kenney, lead instructor at New England Crane School.
Mark has excelled in the field of education despite his early struggles in school. It was not until high school, when diagnosed with dyslexia, that Mark was able to address his difficulties with rigid learning models and classwork, receiving the care and the tools to make it and succeed on his own.
It is no secret the face of our workforce in America is changing. With supply chain demands and gaps in employment wreaking havoc for some this winter, it’s becoming increasingly important to diversify the workplace, especially in the field of construction. The percentage of women working in construction has been a slow rise, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, totaling 11% in 2021, with only 4% actually out of the office and in the trades.
